The school located in the village of Gorgan, Dand district, opened on December 23rd 2010 after extensive repairs. An initial budget of 35 000 USD from the US Commanders Emergency Response Program (CERP) was used to fix the roof, doors, windows, to repaint the interior and exterior, purchase desks, and to dig the school’s well. An Afghan contractor and local workers were hired to complete the necessary repairs. On an average day, approximately 75 children of various ages attend classes at the school.
The Canadian equivalent of the CERP, Canadian contingency Funds (CCF), administered by Canadian Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) teams, took over to help complete further repairs and development of the school.
Task Force Kandahar will continue robust security operations in conjunction with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (GIRoA), Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), and its coalition and civilian partners in order to eliminate insurgent violence and set the conditions for successful and sustainable governance, development and peace in Southern Afghanistan.
