A Memorial ceremony was held on June 8 2011 at the Forward Operating Base Masum Ghar in the district of Panjwa’i to mark the burial of 59 stones representing 72 Canadian Forces soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting the insurgency in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan. A series of whitewashed boulders, representing the soldiers who died fighting in and around Masum Ghar ran along the bottom of a huge red-and-white rock mural Canadian flag etched into the side of a hill at the operating base. The erecting of the Memorial started in 2007 with American K9 operators who wanted to thank Canadian soldiers for their sacrifices. Task Force Kandahar continues to conduct security operations to help Afghans build a country that is more secure, stable and prosperous, and no longer a safe haven for terrorists.
